Well the dust will do more harm to the computer than the actual carpet more dust traps more heat but if you clean it every now and then you should be fine.
Heck even laying a piece of wood on your floor and placing the pc on the wooden platform will solve this problem although it may not be pretty.

But carpets are really good at trapping dust pet hair and all manner of other things.
But i know that assembling a computer on carpet is bad news because of static.
If your bottom step is larger than the others you could easily do that in all wood.

Also most people who carpet their steps don t seem to mind if the carpet is a totally different shade than the wood flooring.
The key is to match the color of the floor with the entryway as one flows into the other.
